International Guest Researchers and Academic Visitors at FNUG in 2025

Throughout 2025, the STEM Centre for Science Education Research FNUG hosted a wide range of international guest researchers, speakers, and collaborators. These visits took place in connection with research seminars, courses, workshops, and online conversations and contributed to academic exchange, knowledge sharing, and the development of FNUG’s international network within STEM education, learning environments, and educational development.

Curating Atmosphere, Pedagogy and Design

In March 2025, FNUG hosted the seminar Curating Atmosphere: Pedagogy. Design, facilitated by Connie Svabo. The seminar explored curating, pedagogy, and design, with a particular focus on the fleeting and dynamic character of atmosphere.

Speakers included

  • Magdalena Holdar, Associate Professor of Art History and Curating, Stockholm University
  • Daniel A. Siedell, Associate Professor of Curating, Stockholm University
  • Nanna Jordt Jørgensen, Associate Professor of Education for Sustainability and Science, Copenhagen University College

International Guest Researchers and Extended Visits

In May 2025, FNUG hosted Keith Devlin, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Stanford University and Adjunct Professor at SDU. During his stay, he participated in teaching, seminars, and academic discussions with staff and students. Keith Devlin, also known as “The Math Guy”, co-teaches the course History of Mathematics together with Chunfang Zhou.

In December 2025, FNUG also hosted Jacob Andrew Malone, guest researcher from the University of California, Berkeley. Jacob is a PhD student in Comparative Literature and Medieval Studies and contributed to several research projects at FNUG, including a forthcoming continuation of Emanuela Marchetti’s Taxonomies project. His research focuses on literary mediation, cognitive poetics, cognitive semiotics, narrative design, and artistic practice as a foundation for interdisciplinary methods.

International Seminars and Lectures

In July 2025, FNUG hosted the research seminar Building, Catalyzing, and Nurturing Educational Ecosystems in Complex Times.

Mathematics Education Across Educational Levels

In September, FNUG hosted a research seminar titled Innovative Pathways in Mathematics Education – from Early School Years to Upper Secondary Education.

Speakers included:

  • Mayu Aoki, Postdoctoral Researcher, Waseda University, Japan
  • Camilla Hellsten Østergaard and Kasper Højbjerg, Associate Professors, Copenhagen University College

Computer Science Education as Co-designed Sociomateriality

In December, Erkki Sutinen, Professor at the University of Turku, Finland, visited FNUG and gave a lecture on Co-design in Computing Education at a research seminar.
Also in December, Charlotta Hilli, Docent in Education at Åbo Akademi University, Finland, visited FNUG with a lecture on Sociomaterial Perspectives on Bildung in Higher Education.

International Online Conversations and Webinars on Creative Pragmatism, Active Learning, and PBL in South Africa

In October, Andrew Pickering, Professor Emeritus at the University of Exeter, participated in a FNUG-facilitated online conversation on Knowledge as living, situated, and spatially mediated. The conversation marked the publication of the book Creative Pragmatics for Active Learning in STEM Education (Springer, 2025).
Other participants included:

  • Connie Svabo and Maiken Westen Holm Svendsen from FNUG.

In November, Sizwe Errol Nxasana, PhD in Educational Sciences from the UNESCO PBL Centre at Aalborg University, presented at a NiSE webinar titled Navigating Teacher Learning in a Context of Implementing Project-Based Learning in South African K–12 Education. The presentation focused on teacher professional development, unlearning established practices, and implementing student-centred teaching approaches.

Innopixel – collaboration and co-location

In the summer of 2025, Innopixel moved into FNUG. Innopixel is a Danish software and technology company that develops immersive XR and AI solutions at the intersection of learning, health, and digital interaction, and it is an active collaboration partner within FNUG’s and SDU’s research and education ecosystem. Here, Innopixel develops solutions that are both research-based and applicable in practice, contributing a commercial and technological perspective, rapid prototyping, strong XR and AI competencies, and access to real-world cases within culture, health, and learning.

Innopixel is an active part of the FNUG and SDU ecosystem and contributes at multiple levels as a:

  • host organisation for students in internships
  • project owner and case partner for master’s theses
  • technical and methodological sparring partner in PhD projects
  • co-applicant and co-author on new research and innovation projects

Currently, Innopixel is involved in the FNUG projects My Digital Competence Portfolio and STEPS.

International Perspectives as Part of FNUG’s Work

The international guests and events in 2025 reflect FNUG’s commitment to developing research and practice in dialogue with international environments and perspectives. These visits have contributed to academic depth, new collaborations, and the continued development of the centre’s work within STEM education, learning environments, and communication.
