If you are interested in proposing a new PhD course, the first thing you need to do is to complete the following form:
https://fmdb1.sdu.dk/fmi/webd/DocSUNweb?param=0&script=StartCoursePlanner
(One submission for each of the courses you are planning to offer)
Please keep the course descriptions free of dates or other information that changes from year to year, as we reuse the same descriptions repeatedly and we do not check each one individually when publishing the courses on the website.
Once you have done this, please send the Graduate School an email on phd@health.sdu.dk so we can verify that they have been correctly entered into the system. In the same email, you are also very welcome to indicate whether you would like to run the course more than once per year.
If your course proposal is sent in before May 1 (any given year), then your course proposals will then be included in the pool of courses we consider for the following year. We expect to inform you whether your courses will be included in what we submit to the Dean’s Office in July, and you will receive a final decision on whether your course is accepted in the end of September or beginning of October.
The course description does not need to be 100% finalized at this stage, but it is important that you try to be as precise as possible regarding:
- the number of hours (total for all instructors, if there are others besides you),
- any expenses for materials,
- travel/accommodation for external lecturers.
We need this information for the course budget as part of the approval process. Since we have a limited budget, we ask that you avoid using too many external lecturers who require coverage of travel and potentially accommodation in addition to teaching fees. The Dean’s Office also prefers that we make use of internal resources at the Faculty of Health Sciences whenever possible.
You must list the actual teaching hours, and the system will automatically calculate according to the following:
- Teaching counts as 3.5 hours per hour
- Exercises count as 2.5 hours per hour
- Other types of attendance and assignment grading count as 1 hour per hour
If/when you receive approval in September/October, we will also ask for a specific course date and the final course description. This allows us to publish the course on our website before 1 November, when we open registration for all our courses.
If the courses are included in our course budget, you will receive ongoing information about what you need to do before, during, and after the course. For example, you will need to check off a participant list to indicate who has passed, and complete instructor contribution forms showing who taught and how much. We use this information to calculate instructor payment.
Regarding instructor payment, the following applies:
- Employees at the Faculty of Health Sciences (Sund):
Payment for teaching will be transferred to the department, and it is then up to the department to decide how the funds are used. Some departments transfer the funds to a research account; others include them in the department budget. You will need to ask your department about their practice. If you have instructors from other departments at Sund, their own department’s rules apply. Payment cannot be made as an honorarium, as this is not allowed for SDU employees. - Other SDU employees:
Cannot be paid, as honoraria cannot be paid to SDU employees and no other payment agreements exist. - External lecturers:
Will be paid via an honorarium form they must submit to us.
