New paper published in Physical Review Research by Dr. P. Elli Stamatopoulou

Dr. P. Elli Stamatopoulou provides the first complete analytical description of the electron-energy loss and photon-emission probabilities for spherical particles excited by penetrating electron beams. In a recent paper published in Physical Review Research, Elli and her POLIMA supervisors, Christos Tserkezis, Christian Wolff, and Asger Mortensen, provide a detailed analytic, Mie-theory based solution that manages to deal with numerical instabilities and divergencies, ensures converged results, and allows to analyse experimental EELS and CL spectra, and clearly distinguish between system eigenmodes and resonances of different origins.

In collaboration with the group of Kurt Busch (Humboldt University Berlin), the results are validated through comparison with a state-of-the-art numerical tool, the discontinuous Galerkin time-domain method. Both approaches prove to be in excellent agreement. Applied to the example of a metallic nanosphere, the two approaches capture efficiently the fundamental electric dipolar, quadrupolar, and higher-order modes, deal with the accumulation of higher-order multipoles at the surface-plasmon frequency, and elegantly take into account the bulk-plasmon and Begrenzung contributions to the EELS spectra.
