Our Rita da Silva was awarded a Villum International Postdoc grant

Our CPop affiliate researcher, Rita da Silva, was awarded a Villum International Postdoc grant of 2.5 million DKK to develop the project Submerging into demography: a new perspective to inform the conservation of aquatic species.

By Rita da Silva, , 3/9/2020

For the next 3.5 years, Rita da Silva aims to apply methodologies developed at the Interdisciplinary Center on Population Dynamics to increase the available knowledge of demographic patterns for freshwater and marine fish. These groups, although economically very important, are poorly known. Within this project, da Silva will study captive populations to obtain insights into age-specific mortality and fertility trends across species that can improve forecasting the effects of fishing pressures in wild populations globally. During this period, Rita will initiate a collaboration with Dr. Sugihara’s lab at Scripps Institute of Oceanography where she will stay for a year.

VILLUM FONDEN established this programme to help balance the gender gap in academic careers, which is currently under-represented by female scientists. Recipients have been selected based on their scientific excellence and ambitious research projects and are expected to build international perspectives and networks at this early career stage.
