Morten Birkved, expert in Life Cycle Assessment and Sustainability Modelling, joins DIAS

Morten Birkved’s research shapes how we assess and improve sustainability in sectors ranging from agriculture and food production to civil engineering and resource management. He was recently appointed Chair of Technical Sciences at DIAS.

Morten Birkved, Professor at SDU's Department of Green Technology (IGT), brings with him a distinguished career in quantitative environmental sustainability assessment, with a particular focus on life cycle engineering, system modelling, and environmental sustainability within the built environment.

As Head of SDU Life Cycle Engineering, he has led pioneering research in life cycle assessment (LCA), including the development of dynamic LCA and the definition of inventory modelling, a cornerstone in understanding the interactions between the technosphere and ecosphere.

With over two decades of experience across academia, consultancy, and public institutions, Morten Birkved has collaborated with leading universities and research centres worldwide, including MIT, NTNU, TU Munich, EPFL, and IIT Mumbai. His work continues to shape how we assess and improve sustainability in sectors ranging from agriculture and food production to civil engineering and resource management.

Morten Birkved will contribute to the intellectual landscape at DIAS with new ways of thinking about environmental impact, understanding how different parts of a system affect each other, and combining knowledge from different fields to create more sustainable solutions. We wish him a warm welcome and look forward to the insights and impact he will bring to our community.
