Jan Hartvigsen, world-leading musculoskeletal health researcher, joins DIAS

The newly appointed DIAS Chair of Health Sciences is renowned for his groundbreaking work in clinical biomechanics and evidence-based care and was knighted by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II for his contributions to science.

Prof. Jan Hartvigsen is Head of Research at the Research Unit for Clinical Biomechanics and Co-Director of the Center for Muscle and Joint Health at SDU’s Faculty of Health Sciences. He also serves as Senior Researcher at the Chiropractic Knowledge Hub. 

With a background as a chiropractor and a PhD in epidemiology, Jan Hartvigsen is internationally recognised for his pioneering work in musculoskeletal health. His research focuses on improving care for people with pain and disability, and he is known for fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across clinical and academic fields.

Prof. Hartvigsen has authored over 350 peer-reviewed publications, including in The Lancet and BMJ, and has contributed to global health initiatives through his work with the World Health Organization and the Global Burden of Disease Study. His leadership in developing clinical guidelines in Denmark has shaped national standards for treating musculoskeletal conditions. 

A passionate mentor, Jan Hartvigsen has guided more than 20 PhD students and co-founded the Chiropractic Academy for Research Leadership. His contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including being named Knight of the Order of Dannebrog by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II in 202.  

- I am truly delighted to now become part of DIAS. Throughout my career, the magic and inspiration have often emerged when I least expected it - usually when working alongside researchers and others from very different backgrounds. I hope that, together with the other Chairs and Fellows, I can contribute to moving closer to solving some of the major challenges of our time in health, environment, and society, says Jan Hartvigsen about his new affiliation.
