Arrival

By car:

From Copenhagen: You have two alternatives: First, you drive via Funen and the Storebælt bridge to Jutland. The drive is about 325 km and takes about 3,5 hours. Second, you can drive to to Bøjden on the south of Funen and take the ferry to Fynshav, not far from Sonderborg, and drive the last couple of kilometers. The ferry sails every two hours and the crossing takes about 50 minutes. You can find information about the ferry prices here (in Danish) and you can find information about the ferry time table here (in Danish).

From Germany: From Flensburg, you take road 8 to Sonderborg. The drive from Flensburg is about 55 km and takes about 45 minutes.

By train:

From Copenhagen: The train from Copenhagen Main Station (“Hovedbanegården”) goes directly to Sonderborg and stops outside the very university building! The trip takes about 3 hours and 40 minutes and the regular price for this trip is 382 DKK. There is a train every two hours, starting at 5.28 am. However, please note: On Mondays the travel takes about 4 hours and 20 minutes, due to the fact that there are construction works in Jutland between 9 am – 5 pm every Monday. This means that you have to go by bus between Vamdrup and Vojens in Jutland. The replacement bus is of course included in your train ticket. You can get all this information from the search engine of the Danish Railways (in Danish).

From Germany: There are two alternatives, and we recommend the second.

Alternative 1: You can take the train via Flensburg and then on to Sonderborg. This means changing trains in a little Danish village called Tinglev. Usually, you have to wait about 75 minutes for the connecting train to arrive, and there is absolutely nothing to do and no real waiting hall.

Alternative 2: You take the train to Flensburg. From there, you go to the Bus Station (ZOB) by taking a city bus or a taxi at the train station (if you go by foot, it is a walk of about 20 minutes). From the ZOB, you take (the Danish) bus 110 to Sonderborg. The trip costs 10 euro and takes about 1 hour 10 minutes (see the time table here) – OR you contact us to see if you can catch a ride with one of those project members who commute between Flensburg and Sonderborg.

By air:

Going via Hamburg Airport: From Hamburg Airport, rent a car to drive to Sønderborg via Flensburg. This drive generally takes about 2 hours (196 km).

Going via Copenhagen Airport: First, you go to Copenhagen Airport. From there, you can fly to Sonderborg Airport (http://www.sonderborg-lufthavn.dk/frontpage.html). To get from the airport to Sonderborg, you can rent a car or take the shuttle or a taxi. The shuttle costs 35 DKK basic fee + 7 DKK/km, about 7 km to Sønderborg city – please not that you have to order the shuttle at least 2 hours in advance. If you tell us in advance, we'll find the right shuttle for you or will pick you up. A taxi costs about 150 DKK. You can read about the transportation between Sonderborg Airport and Sonderborg City here.

Going via Flensburg Schaeferhaus Airport: From there, it is the easiest to rent a car to go to Denmark. However, if you want to go public transport, you can, although this is a rather complicated and will take some time: First, you have to take a taxi or a city bus from Flensburg Schaferhaus Airport to the Flensburg Bus Station (ZOB). There is a city bus leaving for the ZOB once/hour and the ride takes about 10-15 minutes (see the airport information here: http://www.flensburger-flughafen.de/fuer-passagiere-und-besucher/an-und-abreise.html – please note that this information is in German!). Then, at the ZOB you take (the Danish) bus 110 to Sonderborg Bus Station. The trip costs 10 euro and takes about 1 hour 10 minutes (see the time table here) – OR you contact us to see if you can catch a ride with one of those project members who commute between Flensburg and Sonderborg.
