Health and well-being among LGBTQIA+ in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) – a supplementary survey to the Population Health Survey 2024-2026 in Kalaallit Nunaat

In a collaboration between IPS – Greenland's Council for Human Rights and Sipineq+, the report "Kalaallit Nunaanni LGBTQIA+-iuneq" (Being LGBTQIA+ in Kalaallit Nunaat) was published in 2024. The report shows that LGBTQIA+ people in Kalaallit Nunaat often face significant challenges in society, including discrimination, stigmatization, and lack of social acceptance. The consequences of this are serious and can lead to higher levels of mental distress, depression, anxiety, and in the worst cases, suicide.

Today, there is very limited research and data on the health of LGBTQIA+ people in Kalaallit Nunaat, and one of the recommendations in the report is that the LGBTQIA+ area should be included in the nationwide Population Health Surveys. This is both to achieve a basis for comparison with the general population and to gain insight into the extent of LGBTQIA+ citizens and their health challenges in Kalaallit Nunaat.

Purpose

The purpose is to examine the health and well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals in Kalaallit Nunaat (15 years and older) by investigating their health, well-being, including risk and protective factors within this minority group. The study is based on the existing questionnaire from the Population Health Survey 2024-2026 in Kalaallit Nunaat, thereby enabling a comparison between LGBTQIA+ individuals and the general population.

Method

The study will consist of an online questionnaire that can be completed in Kalaallisut (Greenlandic) or Danish. The population base includes the young and adult population in Kalaallit Nunaat who identify as LGBTQIA+ (age 15+). Recruitment will primarily take place via social media using a snowballing method. Sipineq+, a volunteer organization that advocates for LGBTQIA+ rights in Kalaallit Nunaat, and the Greenlandic Human Rights Council will promote the study through social media and private contacts, mainly on Facebook, but also on other platforms if necessary. The recruitment process will aim to ensure a broad and inclusive approach.

Project period

The project is expected to be carried out in parallel with the Population Health Survey 2024-2026 in Kalaallit Nunaat. Recruitment and data collection will take place during 2026. The results will be published shortly thereafter. However, it will only be possible to make comparisons with the general population once data collection for the Population Health Survey is completed in 2027.
