Mental health and well being in Kalaallit Nunaat at a time when the President of the United States expresses a desire to acquire the country.

The background for this supplementary study is the current foreign policy situation, in which statements from the President of the United States about acquiring Kalaallit Nunaat have created insecurity and concern among many people. The study is being conducted because there is, at this moment, a particular need to pay attention to the well‑being of the population.

Purpose

The purpose of the supplementary study is to examine the population’s mental health and well‑being at a time when statements from the President of the United States about acquiring Kalaallit Nunaat have placed the Greenlandic population under an extraordinary level of pressure. The results of the study will be compared with 2025 data from the ongoing Population Survey as well as data from the 2018 Population Health Survey.

Method

The study consists of an online questionnaire. The structure of the questionnaire is based on the survey used in the ongoing Population Health Survey in Kalaallit Nunaat (Population Health Survey 2024–2026), with particular emphasis on including wellvalidated question batteries on mental health, demographic questions, and new items on worries and concerns.

The questionnaire has been distributed through posts on social media containing a link and QR code. Information about the questionnaire has been shared by Sermitsiaq and KNR, Ilisimatusarfik, and the Government of Greenland’s official website (nanoq.gl). The post was also shared with the advisory group for the Population Health Survey, all municipalities, and all upper secondary schools in Kalaallit Nunaat, with an encouragement to redistribute. In addition, the post has been shared in local Facebook groups for all settlements in Kalaallit Nunaat that have an accessible Facebook group.
