Diversity, Access and Equity in School Life

Basic Education should prepare children for participation in democracy, and its practices should be characterized by intellectual freedom, equality, and democracy. However, schools also co-produce differences and inequalities—both in terms of children’s future opportunities and the communities they can access at school. How can we understand this inequality, and how can teachers, educators, and leaders address the fact that children have unequal participation opportunities in school life? How can they help ensure that the didactic and pedagogical sorting of students is as fair as possible?

The purpose of the Diversity, Access, and Equity in School Life focus area is to create a foundation for explorative, practice-oriented, and practice-involving research and development projects. These projects will examine whether and how primary schools can promote equal opportunities for a good childhood, quality education, and democratic participation for all children—regardless of their background.

We investigate diversity in school life through intersections between school management, didactics, general pedagogy, leisure pedagogy, and social pedagogy.
