Social Media for Democracy: How to Use Digital Platforms for Good?

Social media is often associated with manipulation, distraction, and misinformation, factors that can undermine democratic discourse and political participation. At the same time, digital platforms offer opportunities to strengthen democracy by promoting political interest, participation, and informed citizenship through the personalisation of content based on users' interests. This project investigates possible positive outcomes from social media use. It examines the conditions under which, for example, content personalisation on digital platforms contributes positively to political interest, knowledge or participation, and the role of media literacy in this context.
Ultimately, the project aims to capture the potential positive impact of social media on democracies, outline the role of media literacy, and identify strategies and interventions that can help make social media a tool that supports democratic values and well-informed public discourse.
