Strengthening Arctic health networks through partnerships and mentorship program

Circumpolar health research is supported by a range of councils, conferences, networks, and working groups. Over time, coordination of these has shifted from centralized structures, such as the International Union for Circumpolar Health, to more independent and loosely connected efforts. Many of these networks overlap in membership and focus areas yet operate with limited administrative resources. This fragmentation can lead to duplicated efforts and missed opportunities for collaboration.

Purpose

This project brings together representatives from multiple circumpolar health networks to strengthen partnerships and improve coordination. By fostering collaboration and reducing duplication, the project aims to make better use of limited resources and advocate more effectively for health and well-being in Arctic communities. A key focus is also to support Indigenous scholars and early-career researchers through a mentorship program that promotes knowledge exchange and long-term engagement in circumpolar health research and education.

Method

The project uses the UArctic Thematic Network on Health and Wellbeing as a central platform for collaboration. Through regular meetings, both virtual and in-person, partners share knowledge, align efforts, and explore joint initiatives. Inclusive methods such as sharing circles are used to ensure all voices are heard, reflecting Indigenous values of trust, consensus, and relationship-building. The project also develops a mentorship program offering internships and collaborative opportunities for young and Indigenous researchers. All activities are guided by UArctic’s core values and supported by coordinated documentation and administration.
