Model for a National Health Profile for Pregnant Women – a pilot study

Pregnancy is a crucial period, especially for the child’s health, but also for the mother’s well-being in the short and long term. The mother’s health and lifestyle before and during pregnancy play a central role in the course of pregnancy. A national health profile for pregnant women can help identify and monitor risk factors and promote the health of both the pregnant woman and the child. Furthermore, a health profile can uncover disparities in selected indicators and potential differences between geographical areas.

In Denmark, eight maternity wards collect data from pregnant women using PRO questionnaires, which cover the pregnant woman's mental health, lifestyle, and social relationships. These data constitute a valuable source for a national health profile for pregnant women.

In relation to research these data provides important information concerning the health of mothers and children, including mental health. For example, the incidence of perinatal depression is increasing, which has consequences for the health of the mother and potentially also for the unborn child. Mental health problems not only affect the individual, but also have social and economic implications for society, such as health inequality, increased healthcare costs and reduced productivity.

Purpose

The purpose of this pilot study is to develop the basis for a national health profile for pregnant women using existing data. In the longer term, the overall goal is to establish a national health profile for pregnant women, which covers selected indicators of health behaviour in women before and during pregnancy. Additionally, this initiative aims to create data suitable for research concerning women’s health and lifestyle before and during pregnancy, focusing on health and well-being for both the woman and the child.

Method

The PRO data will be linked with socio-economic and sociodemographic variables, as well as selected information on pregnancy complications, birth course and outcomes. These data will form the basis of a descriptive health profile for pregnant women. A description of the quality and representativeness of the existing data will also be prepared. The Danish Institute of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark, is responsible for this part of the project.

The usability of the data will also be tested in a registry-based research project focusing on mental health.

In addition, a communication plan will be developed to ensure the dissemination of results and provide guidance to relevant stakeholders. The Center for Clinical Research and Prevention, Capital Region, is responsible for this part of the project.
