Course: Introduction to literature search in scientific databases

This course is held both online and face-to-face.

The aim of the course is to introduce you to search principles and techniques when looking for literature in health science databases—primarily PubMed and EMBASE.

Before attending the course, you are asked to watch eight videos that you will find on the SDU website. These deal with:

  • The research question (PICO and PEO)
  • Selection of databases
  • MeSH in Medline and in PubMed
  • EmTree in Embase
  • Reporting of literature searches
  • Search protocols and Flow chart.

The course itself consists of a presentation with examples of literature searches. There will be further details about literature search with search options, keywords (e.g. MeSH terms), and how to save a search. You can also discuss and ask questions about the videos.

The SDU Library also offers an online course for students and SDU employees in how to use Endnote (for Mac, English version):

EndNote is a software program that allows you to insert citations and create bibliographies when writing up research. The course will explain how to download references to Endnote, create references manually, and insert Endnote references into Word documents. You will need to do a 1-hour preparation before the course.

The SDU Library also offers workshops where you can get help with your searches:

You should already have participated in the course on ”Introduction to literature search in scientific databases”, or something similar.
