Narrative Psychiatry in Tension: Reading Twenty-First-Century Schizophre nia Memoirs Across Cultures

This talk examines how twenty-first-century schizophrenia memoirs negotiate and compli cate psychiatric understandings of schizophre nia through representations of lived experience. Focusing on Clem and Olivier Martini’s Bitter Medicine (2010), Polo Tonka’s Dialogue avec moi-même (2013), and Josie Méndez-Negrete’s A Life on Hold (2015), it explores how forms of memoir—graphic, tes timonial, parental, and autoethnographic— from different contexts—Canadian, U.S., and French—foreground diverse experiential, affec tive, and embodied epistemologies that chal lenge or complement clinical knowledge. Bringing narrative psychiatry into dialogue with Mad Studies, the talk considers how cultural ly situated memoirs both unsettle psychiatric descriptions and expand our understanding of schizophrenia.

Call for Papers for a special issue on ”Literature and Health in the 21 Century” in the journal Humanities.
What is the use of literature in view of today’s health challenges? This Special Issue focuses on the European region and invites papers that explore current challenges in health, well-being, and healthcare as represented in literature.
Guest editors are Anita Wohlmann (University of Southern Denmark) and Anders Juhl Rasmussen (Copenhagen University).
The submission deadline is June 1, 2026.
