The cellular composition at any place in the body is extraordinarily complex. Through interaction with cells in the immediate vicinity, a cancerous cell experiences a myriad of signaling cues that can and will shape the fate of the malignant one.

With the advent of novel techniques, it is now for the first time possible to disentangle the distinct contribution of each component of the tumor microenvironment to the growth or death of cancer cells. Such insight could pave ways for entirely new ways of combating cancer.
