Call for researchers to work in the Nordic Humanities Center

The Nordic Humanities Center is now accepting applications for the third call, which runs from 1 February 2026 to 31 January 2027. Six researchers in the humanities from the University of Southern Denmark and the University of Copenhagen will have the opportunity to work on a specific project for one year and, in collaboration with the centre's permanent staff, reach out to the outside world to create new knowledge and insights.

The Nordic Humanities Center, which was established with a DKK 60 million donation from the A. P. Møller Foundation. Møller Foundation, brings together researchers across disciplines with the aim of investigating some of society's major challenges and, in interaction with internships and civil society actors, helping to create positive change.

- The humanities already make significant contributions to understanding, analysing and putting many of society's challenges into perspective. But we can be much better at reaching out to society's actors and institutions. The center creates new opportunities to connect basic research with the society around us," says Anders Engberg-Pedersen, Director of the Nordic Humanities Center.

Knock on the door

The center officially opened on 7 March 2024, and the first batch of talented researchers will round off their project on 5 December with the conference "Life in the Welfare State: Humanistic Perspectives on Societal Challenges".

The next group of researchers, who are already planning their year at the center, are working on the project "In the Shadow of War: Denmark, the Nordics and the Return of Geopolitics". The latest batch includes researchers from the fields of history and Danish, American and East European studies, art history and photography studies.

- The center offers many opportunities to bring different disciplines together and to establish partnerships outside the center. I therefore recommend all potential applicants to knock on my door so that their application can be as strong as possible," says Anders Engberg-Pedersen, Director of the Nordic Humanities Center.

Visiting researchers from non-academic environments

The group of researchers whose project is selected will have the opportunity to associate one or more researchers from the Nordic countries as guest researchers. This is done either by inviting one researcher to collaborate for a ten-month period or by inviting up to six researchers for a shorter time frame.

To strengthen the connection to non-academic environments, one or two of the visiting researchers must come from a cultural institution, a company, a civil society organization or a ministry, for example.

The Nordic Humanities Center has entered into a partnership with Videnskab.dk, whereby researchers affiliated with the center publish articles aimed at a wide audience. They are called HUM briefs and can be read here on the website. The center is also working on a book series with Gads Forlag.

On the Nordic Humanities Center's LinkedIn channel, the center's activities are communicated and you can read about panel debates, journalistic articles, workshops and conferences.

Deadline for application is 5 March 2025
