Udfordringer - small inputs for big challenges
The Nordic Humanities Center publishes a series of books that bring together humanities knowledge and lively communication around the great challenges facing society.
The books are written by fellows at the Nordic Humanities Centre and are published in collaboration with Nord Academic/Gads Forlag. Subject editors are Anna Cornelia Ploug and Anders Engberg-Pedersen.
Alongside the book series, the podcast "Udfordringer" will also be released, where the authors talk about the book in one episode and in another episode discuss the book's broader topic together with relevant social actors.
The host throughout is science journalist Tor Arnbjørn from Rakkerpak Productions.

Book 1
Vild Vækst
Can economic growth and ecological sustainability go hand in hand? And can the climate crisis be solved with technology and innovation alone? Vild Vækst focuses on the current challenges by looking back. The book depicts the political discussions of the 1970s about low growth, debates the 1990s ideas of sustainable development and confronts the 2010s notions of competition, technology and green growth.

Book 2
Udsat Natur
Where there are big animals, there are also strong stories and intense emotions. But where there are people, the big animals have often been driven out or domesticated. Today, they are returning as keys to a more wild and diverse nature. And as focal points in new conflicts about what nature should be. Udsat Natur examines nature management through culture. Because conservation is not just about biology, but also about art, cultural politics and values. Should nature be adorned or used? Is it for people or for animals?

Book 3
Billedtræthed
Images of war are everywhere. But why do we need war photography when the daily bombardment of images from the world's conflicts threatens to make us blind, passive and indifferent? The book Billedtræthed focuses on the role of war photography in an image-saturated age. It examines how we can relate to the war in Ukraine and the world's conflicts in general - and discusses the possibilities and limitations of war photography in a time when we are manipulated by AI and fake news and find it increasingly difficult to distinguish between reality and construction.
Author: Mette Sandbye.

"The purpose of the series is to strengthen and challenge the public dialogue with some sharp perspectives from the humanities. But we've been missing a format that brings serious research and lively communication together around society's major challenges. Now we have it."
