Respons | Det inflammerade biblioteket
What should we do with litterature that contain questionable values? In the essay "Det inflammerade biblioteket", published in the Swedish journal, Respons, Anders Engberg-Pedersen, Head of the Nordic Humanities Centre and Professor, examines how we should approach classics that are both central to our cultural heritage and ethically problematic. Using examples from, amongst others, the Marquis de Sade, Céline, Karen Blixen, Virginia Woolf and Peter Handke, he demonstrates how world literature is increasingly giving rise to heated debates. Instead of polarised positions, he proposes an analytical approach in which we confront the problematic values within these works and examine how they are constructed and how they function.
