Avoidance or Euphemistic Pedagogical Strategies – Side-stepping Issues of Inequality in Education

Abstract

We show that the white male is (re)produced as the normative body in first aid education. This positions both women and people of color as outliers who deviates from the expected normative embodiment of the first aid recipient. Concretely, we show that people with breasts are problematized as potentially challenging to do CPR on. Similarly, racialization – displaced onto religion and further onto clothing practices - is used to problematize whether one should undress a woman with a headscarf if she needs CPR. This capture that some bodies are positioned as explanation requiring. Concretely, we show that, what we label avoidance and euphemistic pedagogical strategies are used by first aid instructors, to duck potentially uncomfortable (re)negotiation of the current cultural norms. These pedagogical strategies have the effect that inequalities are left largely unaddressed. Therefore, the pedagogical (re)production of the body imagined as the recipient of CPR remains white and male.
