Surgical Otology and Vestibulogy

The main focus of vestibulogy is the balance organ of the inner ear, the nervous system, vision and the proprioceptive pathways of the spinal cord and extremities.

The overall research topics range from cancer of the ear canal, middle ear surgery and eustachian tube dilatation to cochlear implantation; quality assurance of procedures and quality of life studies. The scope of the projects varies from reports and smaller surveys to meta-analyses and national research collaborations. Many of our research projects are based on clinical issues and aims at ensuring quality and improving investigation and treatment within our field, for the benefit of patients and society.

Our current research projects focus on:

  • Cochlear implant which is an advanced hearing device that is surgically inserted into the inner ear (cochlea)
  • Preliminary steps in exploring the optimal treatment of patulous Eustachian tube disease as well as obstructive disease of the Eustachian tube
  • Socio-economic aspects of chronically dizzy patients
  • Co-operation with physiotherapists regarding dizzy patients
  • Optimizing the overall treatment of dizzy patients

Several of the researchers also teach medical and audio-logopedical students and ensures in this way that the latest research results reach the medical students. The research group consists of medical doctors and medical students .
