Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to create text, images, music, logos, designs, and other forms of content. As these technologies become more sophisticated, they challenge traditional assumptions about originality, authorship, and intellectual property rights in general.
This talk discusses how EU copyright law responds to outputs created with the involvement of AI systems. In particular, it explores the role of human contribution in determining whether such outputs may qualify for intellectual property protection and whether existing legal principles are capable of addressing these developments without legislative reform.
The talk further considers whether insights derived from copyright law may also have relevance for other areas of intellectual property law, including EU trademark and design law.
Lesley Akua Twum Wittendorff is a Ph.D. fellow at the University of Southern Denmark. Her doctoral research focuses on the intersection between intellectual property law and artificial intelligence. In particular, she examines whether existing principles of EU copyright, design, and trademark law can accommodate outputs created with the involvement of AI systems and how the law distinguishes between human and AI mediated creation.
