The Spanish network of tourism researchers has awarded the prize for the best research article in the field of tourism in 2021 to our former Ph.D.-student and postdoc Barbora Gulisova.

She has won the award for the article “Tracking visitors in crowded spaces using zenith images: Drones and time-lapse”, which she has written with two researchers from the University of Girona. It was chosen from a pool of articles sent in by the members of the network.

The article is about using drones and time-lapse-video to investigate the behavior of the tourists at cultural heritage places with many tourists. The researchers have used drone photos and time-laps-video from The Archaeology Museum of Catalonia Empúries and the Cathedral Square in Girona, Spain, where they could see by analyzing the photos which areas that are most trafficked and for the longest time, and where there could be done something to spread out the tourists. The recordings can therefore help to plan the tourist activities on the spot.

Even though Barbora won the award last year, it was first awarded in January this year.
