Fundamental Interactions and Particle Physics

Laser through tunnel

We attempt to understand the most fundamental theories that describe our universe and its smallest building blocks. The fundamental framework that we use is quantum field theory and is in many ways the inevitable result if you take quantum mechanics and Einstein's special relativity and unite them into a big whole.

Quite generally, quantum field theories come in several different guises and can exhibit many different phenomena. One can imagine fundamental theories in different dimensions, having different particle content, having different symmetries and so on. In this way, our research revolves around understanding the universe at the most fundamental level. It has many the potential for different breakthroughs including unraveling the origin of mass, the strong CP problem, matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe, the confinement of quarks into hadrons and so on.
