From agricultural land to coastal wetlands
The biology department will focus on coastal wetlands as a NbS and will run activities in the coastal area in the vicinity of Vejrup Å.
Lab2 will run from May 2025 to April 2026.
Framework for Ecosystem Services
The activities planned within the ARCADIA LAB2 is partially overlapping with the PostDoc research: “Integrating Abiotic and Biotic Ecosystem Services: A comprehensive assessment for developing Nature-Based Solutions Management Plan in European rural protected areas” which will run from Feb.2025 till June 2028.
During the first nine month we will starting to develop the framework for assessing Natural Capital into different setting: the agricultural land and the area characterized by coastal wetlands, as selected Natural based Solution.
We would like to research what the community could potentially gain or lose, in terms of Ecosystem Services, before and after the implementation of coastal wetlands.
With LAB2 we will focus on:
- Framework development and selection of relevant ecosystem services for coastal wetlands
- Qualitative data collection, literature review on Natural Capital, Ecosystem Services benefits- drawbacks in connection with Natural Based Solutions
- Development of the questionnaire
- Quantitative data collection for Cultural Services within questionnaire to participants to several events across Denmark
- Preliminary biotic and abiotic assessment (qualitative-desk assessment) of Vejrup Å
- Quantitative data collection from the field.
- Adaptation of the framework to the data need/availability
Other activities
Besides the framework for ecosystem services, we will also be looking at the negotiation process of buying agricultural land for NbS. The aim will be: Identifying barriers and potential in the negotiation process between municipality and land-owners. Though interviews with land-owners and other stakeholders we will ask questions like:
- The negotiation process as need-based or demand-based?
- The negotiation process as collaboration or conflict?
- How are relevant dimensions viewed by the different parties (e.g. knowledge, inclusion, economy and purpose)?
- Are different views creating barriers?
