Graduate Summer Course in Bioacoustics

Intensive biennial international 14-day PhD course on bioacoustics in air and water (10 ETCS). This course focuses on methods and techniques for studying animal sound communication in air (infra-, ultra- and sonic ranges), in water, and in solids (vibrations). The course is taught at the marine and terrestrial field stations of the Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark. Strict priority is given to students enrolled in a PhD-program at their home universities. The maximal number of participants is 24. The teaching team includes the entire SDU sound group and leading international researchers, including Elodie Mande-Briefer, Hannah ter Hofstede, Nicolas Mathevon, Natasha Mhatre, Mark Johnson, Sue Anne Zollinger and more.

Course Directors: Coen Elemans and Jakob Christensen-Dalsgaard.

Master-level courses

Behavioral Neuroscience (BB851)

Intensive lab-based course covering the basics of Behavioral neuroscience (5 ECTS) in the fall semester. The brain is without doubt the most fascinating and complex organ. The aim of this course is to give you a broad overview of the field of Behavioral Neuroscience and introduce the major experimental techniques and animal model systems in Behavioral Neuroscience. You will apply modern measurement and data-analysis methods to quantify behavior of animals and their nervous systems. The course is taught at the SDU Odense Campus.

Teaching team includes Coen Elemans, Iris Adam and Jakob Christensen-Dalsgaard.

Sound and Hearing (BB823)

Intensive one week field and lab course on Bioacoustics (5 ECTS) in the spring semester. Sound is everywhere and affects every aspect of our daily life. We use sound to communicate in our speech, arts and society at large. We listen to sound to avoid dangers in traffic, and noise affects our stress levels. In this course you will be introduced to the wonderful world of sound and acoustic communication. The course covers the basics of sound, recording of animals and taught at the Svanninge field station.

Teaching team includes all investigators of the entire sound group. Main teacher: Coen Elemans.

Basic bioacoustics using Matlab (BB838)

Basic bioacoustics using Matlab is a 5 ECTS course spanning a whole semester. Working in the field and recording acoustic signals of various animals is an important skill set to decipher and interpret animal behaviour. However, dealing with sound is by far non-trivial.  It is of utmost importance to understand the underlying mathematical and physical principles of sound but also of your recording gear.  Additionally, we are using Matlab to teach you programming and hands-on bioacoustic signal analysis.

Teaching team includes Magnus Wahlberg and Felix Häfele.
