About Samuel Cushman
Samuel A. Cushman is a Professor and DIAS Chair at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). Prior to joining SDU, he served as Chief Science Officer for Terradapt and was a Director for the Center for Landscape Science within the US Forest Service. His research fundamentally advances landscape ecology and genetics by challenging traditional paradigms and integrating advanced computational methods.
He is a leading advocate for the Multiscale Gradient Paradigm, which provides a more ecologically robust alternative to the traditional categorical Patch-Mosaic model. His current work focuses on using Artificial Intelligence to orchestrate landscape optimization, guiding conservation planning. He also brings practical expertise to ecosystem management and is a Certified Master Gardener with training in regenerative agriculture.

“The biggest challenge the world faces - not just in ecology, but period - is managing the climate and ecological crisis and finding solutions that are technically rigorous, politically feasible, economically viable, socially acceptable.”
