The Morten Frost Group

We focus on bone metabolism and the interplay between bone and whole-body energy metabolism. Incorporating basic and clinical research methodologies, our group takes a translational approach to understanding how metabolic conditions including endocrine disorders affect bone and vice versa. We currently focus on the impact of diabetes, incretin hormones and mitochondrial disorder on the skeleton.

We are a multidisciplinary research group that includes master and PhD students, technicians, medical doctors, and basic researchers that bridges basic research activities at the Molecular Endocrinology Laboratory and clinical research at the Bone and Mineral Metabolism Unit, Department of Endocrinology, and the Steno Diabetes Centre Odense research group, at Odense University Hospital.

Our current research areas include A) the impact of type 1 and 2 diabetes including microvascular disease on key characteristics of human bone cells and structure as well as risk of fractures. B) the effect of incretin hormones GIP and GLP-1 on human bone cell activity, and the effect of Semaglutide (a diabetes and obesity treatment) on bone formation, structure, and strength in adults with low bone mass. C) the impact of energy metabolism on bone cell activity using cellular models and cells and tissue from patients with rare mitochondrial disorders.
