26th May 2021, 16.00 – 16.30: Conversation between CWS President Professor Jamie Shea and Professor Mark Webber about the question “What should we expect from the upcoming NATO Summit?”.

NATO will host a Summit meeting for Heads of State and Government on 14 June 2021. The meeting will be President Biden’s first visit to Europe as President and will focus on the challenges and opportunities in a new and radically changed strategic environment. The Summit is expected to launch the preparation process for an updated strategic concept. Professor Shea and Professor Webber will discuss what to expect for the Summit and what NATO should include in an updated strategic concept.
Jamie Shea is Professor of Strategy and Security within the Strategy and Security Institute at the University of Exeter (since September 2018). He is also a Senior Fellow responsible for security and defence programmes at Friends of Europe and a Senior Advisor with the European Policy Centre. He is currently Distinguished Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and Security at the Institute of European Studies, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium and Visiting Professor, Department of Politics at the University of Surrey. Jamie Shea is the Honorary President of the Center for War Studies and serves as Secretary General of the Global Military Advisory Council on Climate Change (GMACCC) and is an Associate Fellow of the International Security Programme at Chatham House, United Kingdom. He is also a member of the Senior Mentors group, advising the NATO Special Operations Forces Headquarters at SHAPE, Belgium. From 1980 to 2018, Jamie Shea was a member of the International Staff of NATO in Brussels, where his last position was Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges. Mark Webber is Professor of International Politics at the University of Birmingham. He has been a Trustee of the British International Studies Association (BISA) since 2014 and the BISA Chair, 2019 – 2021. Mark is a NATO specialist and a one-time scholar of Russia and the former Soviet Union. Recent work in these areas has been published in the journals International Affairs, European Journal of International Security, Review of International Studies, European Security, West European Politics, Defence Studies and Journal of European Integration. He is co-editor (with Adrian Hyde-Price) of Theorising NATO: New Perspectives on the Transatlantic Alliance (Routledge 2016) and co-author (with James Sperling and Martin Smith) of What’s Wrong with NATO and How to Fix It (Polity 2021). He is currently co-editing (with James Sperling) the Oxford Handbook on the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
