Mads Israelsen, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor and clinical liver disease researcher at the Odense Liver Research Center (FLASH), Department of Medical Gastroenterology, Odense University Hospital. He is currently undertaking specialist training in gastroenterology and hepatology.

His research focuses on steatotic liver disease, where both alcohol exposure and metabolic dysfunction may act as key drivers, as well as on the development of liver fibrosis and complications of cirrhosis. A consistent theme in his work is to investigate how alcohol consumption and metabolic risk factors influence disease course, progression, and clinical outcomes in patients. He has a particular interest in biomarkers—measurable signals in blood or other samples—that can support risk stratification, identify patients at increased risk of complications, and enable more precise follow-up and management. In addition, he works on the gut–liver axis and the clinical relevance of the microbiome in alcohol-related and steatotic liver disease.

Mads Israelsen has broad experience in clinical research, including randomised trials, and regularly disseminates his findings through scientific publications and presentations at major international congresses such as EASL and AASLD. He is active in the international hepatology community and holds a leadership role in EASL’s Young Investigator Task Force, serving as Chair from 2025. Alongside his research, he contributes to teaching and supervision of junior researchers and PhD students.
