Paula is Associated Professor at the Department of Biology, Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark. In ARCADIA, Paula will contribute with research and expert knowledge on nature-based solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation with specific focus on costal initiatives in salt water.
WHY ARCADIA?
Denmark is in a pressing need to fulfill different National agendas, Climate adaptation and mitigation, Water Framework Directive, and the habitat directive. On top, the National territory is largely used, with ~60% agricultural land and 13% paved area (cities, streets etc.), while the nature is truly pressed and lack space. If the country is to fulfill all EU requirements the space planning strategy must be re-thought. NBS addresses some or all of these plans, including Nature as a key element. My focus in Arcadia, it is therefore to investigate and plan key NBS’s, as multifunctional tool to optimize the uses of space and implement the quality of Danish Nature.
WHY IS ARCADIA AN INTERESTING PROJECT TO BE A PART OF FOR SDU?
Arcadia bring us the opportunity to apply our knowledge to real cases, contributing to the practical development of methods, compressive guidelines etc. Our work with Fyn’s municipalities, the Region of Southern Denmark and water facilities, provides a perfect frame to test some of the concepts we work with as researchers in real life. It helps us as well to identify gaps of knowledge and interesting future needs for our lines of research. Finally, it brings the latest scientific findings to use.
