On the 10th of December Adrian Pablé(University of Hong Kong) visits SDU to present his lecture "Integrating the Sign" (see abstract below). The lecture takes place in room O94 from 14.30 to 16.00.
Abstract:
The study of communication, both human and non-human, involves considerations about the sign and its nature. Some reject the sign and ban it from their theorising, while others see the sign as ubiquitous. Some conceive it as a material entity, while others treat it as a purely psychological phenomenon. In this lecture I would like to consider some of the sign conceptions current in language studies and its semiotics, paying particular attention to the 'integrational' conception of the sign, as outlined by Roy Harris (1931-2015), founder of integrational linguistics. I shall argue that the adoption of an integrational semiology makes possible an understanding of human sign-making that is radically different from any other developed so far because of the way the integrationist conceives of signs.
