Rasmus Mariager is a professor of history at the University of Copenhagen, specializing in contemporary Danish and European history. In the last two decades, he has written several monographs, including the PhD thesis I tillid og varm sympati (MTP 2006), the dissertation Den vesttyske forbindelse, vol. 1-2 (KU, 2017) and most recently the broad-based Sjælekampen. Danskernes kolde krig (Gyldendal, 2024), which was nominated for the JP non-fiction prize and for the historical book of the year 2024 and received the Svend Henningsen prize.

Rasmus Mariager is a co-author of three commission reports and studies commissioned by successive governments, and from 2017 to 2019 was research director for Denmark's independent investigation of the country's military involvement in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. The investigation was published under the title Hvorfor gik Danmark i krig? vol. 1-4 (Rosendahls, 2019).

He also wrote several volumes in the PET Commission's report on the Danish Intelligence Service's surveillance during the Cold War. Rasmus Mariager's work bridges the gap between historical analysis and contemporary security challenges, and his research is aimed at both researchers and decision-makers.

Finally, Rasmus Mariager often participates in the public debate on contemporary Danish and international history. He is a regular commentator for Weekendavisen.
