Johanne Kragh Hansen, MD, PhD, is the day-to-day manager of the Centre for Liver Research and a key driver of the centre’s strategic development together with Camilla Dalby Hansen. Her research focuses on the gut–liver axis, with a specific aim to understand how the gut microbiome influences metabolic processes and the risk of disease.
Johanne coordinates the centre’s participation in the Microbiome Health Initiative, a large interdisciplinary research collaboration investigating whether the gut microbiome plays a causal role in the development of cardiometabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The initiative aims to generate new, cutting-edge evidence that can enable prevention and novel treatments by harnessing the potential of the microbiome to improve human health.
In addition, Johanne has led the clinical Nutritional Drink Study, which compared the effects of a postbiotic (ReFerm®, formerly Profermin®)—designed to support a healthy gut microbiota—with a nutritional supplement drink (Fresubin®) with an optimised energy and protein composition in patients with alcohol-related chronic liver disease.
