Project description
The basic idea is to analyze the “paradox of war” – that war heavily influences the development of state development and societies – in a comparative and historical perspective. We approach this through several studies of the specific mechanisms linking war and societal development, focusing especially on how war influence social policy and welfare states. The overall framework found in the article:
Mass Warfare and the Welfare State – Causal Mechanisms and Effects (see: https://www.jstor.org/stable/26353805?seq=1)
The research around the topic has been ongoing since 2014. Focus has been on the Western World in the 20th Century. Currently a comparative volume on The Cold War and the Welfare State (edited by Klaus Petersen, Herbert Obinger, Carina Schmitt and Michele Mioni) is under preparation with Oxford University Press.
