What is the study about?
The study is a quantitative observational study based on a map-based survey. A total of 1,838 adults (aged 15–90 years) who engage in recreational walking participated.
The study examines differences in recreational walking motives across sociodemographic groups, as well as where recreational walking takes place and which place qualities are preferred.
Main conclusions:
- Mental well-being, physical health, and experiential aspects are the most common motives for recreational walking.
- Walking motives vary by education and income, particularly in relation to experiences and social purposes.
- Recreational walking often starts away from home and is not confined to the immediate neighborhood.
- Greenery, water, wildlife, scenic views, and tranquility are the most valued place qualities.
