Join the workshop: AI literacy - towards a critical and informed approach in higher education with Explainable AI

On Wednesday 27th August, you can join the workshop "AI literacy - towards a critical and informed approach in higher education with Explainable AI"

Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into educational settings presents new challenges and responsibilities for those involved in teaching, curriculum design and evaluation in higher education.

The growing complexity of intelligent systems, in particular, requires educators and researchers to develop the critical competencies needed to understand and govern automated decision-making processes.

Against this backdrop, Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) emerges as a pedagogical tool that can promote transparency, awareness and trust in interactions with AI.

This workshop introduces the concept of XAI from a pedagogical perspective to promote critical AI literacy and pedagogical reflection. Participants will explore how the XAI approach can be used to design and implement AI systems responsibly in higher education, paying particular attention to transparency, trust, and the ethical dimensions of automated decision-making.

Duration and dates

  • Wednesday 27th August 2025 from 10.00 to 13.00 - SDU Odense, room U151.

Target group

  • PhD students in the humanities and social sciences and other employees that are interested in AI literacy.

Course content

  • An introduction to the pedagogical and ethical challenges of AI in higher education.
  • Exploration of the XAI approach and its role in educational contexts.
  • Collaborative analysis of concrete scenarios related to the explainability of intelligent systems.
  • Hands-on: Design of educational strategies and training interventions (in groups) to promote AI literacy through explainability.
  • Final reflection on interdisciplinary approaches and responsible innovation practices.

Outcomes

  • Understand the pedagogical and ethical challenges associated with using AI in education.
  • Define and contextualise the XAI approach in education.
  • Identify the stakeholders involved and the critical issues related to the adoption of AI in higher education.
  • Co-design strategies for the critical, transparent, and responsible integration of AI tools into educational processes.
