Faisal Mahmood has worked with medical physics for more than 20 years, initially in the subspecialty nuclear medicine at Gentofte Hospital and from 2006 in oncological radiation therapy at Herlev Hospital. Along the way, Faisal Mahmood defended his PhD thesis on electrochemotherapy for brain tumours. As part of his PhD thesis, he applied advanced MRI methods to measure treatment effects; a field of research he subsequently continued with in radiotherapy.

Faisal Mahmood’s primary research field is the development and use of MRI biomarkers for biologically guided radiation therapy. While geometric precision is completely essential in radiation therapy, the development of biological precision is essential to achieve a better individualised treatment, according to Faisal Mahmood. He believes that MRI technology will play a crucial role in the future of radiation therapy.

In 2017, Faisal Mahmood decided to continue his career at the Department of Oncology at Odense University Hospital, where he was tasked with assisting in the implementation of Denmark’s first MRI accelerator. Since 2022, he has headed the research efforts in the Radiophysics Laboratory, which is part of the Department of Oncology at Odense University Hospital.

As a newly appointed professor attached to the Department of Oncology at Odense University Hospital, Faisal Mahmood is ready to continue to contribute to improving and strengthening MRI-guided radiotherapy, with a particular focus on the MRI accelerator. In addition, he has made it his mission to support the other research areas of the Radiophysics Laboratory and promote collaboration across disciplines.

In addition to his research contributions, Faisal Mahmood will continue to actively support the clinical workflows of radiation therapy. This involves implementing new methods and optimising existing ones to ensure effective and safe patient treatments.
