How to perform a Systematic Critical or Scoping Review – a 5-day course over one term

Course description

The purpose of the five-day course is to help you publish a systematic, or some other type of transparent literature review. The course is suitable for those whose topic does not fit a classical Cochrane review.

However, it is possible to attend only day 1, to get an introduction into the topic, with the aim of being able to relatively quickly and critically read systematic reviews.

The pre-requirement for the five-day course is that you have selected your topic and found at least some of your articles to be included in the review. You should have worked out your research questions.

The course consists of instruction, coaching, individual work, and group work with peer-review.

Please note, this is not a course in how to perform a meta-analysis, i.e., it is not a course in statistics.

What you will get from this course:

  • Knowledge about the various types of reviews and how these are designed
  • Knowledge about how tosearch articles for a systematic review (information provided by a research librarian)
  • Knowledge about the technical aspect of transparent reviews
  • Skills in applying checklists for the descriptive and results parts of your review and for the quality of the methodology of articles
  • Competence in analysing and interpreting data from a systematic review
  • A plan for the structure and contents of your own systematic review
Teaching methods

Instructions mixed with individual and group work using examples from the literature. Participants will need their PC, as they will have to find these examples via Pubmed. It is also a good idea for participants to prepare/bring some systematic reviews they find relevant in PDF or paper format for scrutiny and discussions.
