Course description
This course is compulsory for investigators, students, and other scientists involved in animal experiments. It corresponds to the qualification requirements described in §55 of Executive Order 2028 of 14/12/2020, Chapter 14, on personnel working with laboratory animals.
The course qualifies participants to independently plan and conduct animal experiments under their own experimental license, in accordance with EU Directive 2010/63/EU, covering the following functions:
A: Carrying out procedures on animals
B: Designing procedures and projects
D: Euthanizing animals
It is offered once a year in September and concludes with a written exam. The course includes both theoretical and practical introduction to handling, housing and use of laboratory animals, emphasizing the principles of refinement, reduction, and replacement of animals use in research.
The theoretical part covers, among other topics:
- Legislation (Danish and European)
- Animal welfare, ethics and the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement)
- Minor procedures in laboratory animals
- Basic biology, including anatomy, physiology, genetics, and behavior
- Housing and husbandry
- Health and hygiene, including health monitoring
- Occupational health and safety
- Experimental design and animal models
- Anaesthesia and analgesia
- Humane endpoints and euthanasia
Intended learning outcome
After the course, participants should be able to carry out procedures on animals, design procedures and projects and euthanize animals for scientific procedures.
Teaching methods
Self-study via e-learn, lectures and practical exercises. All practical exercises are mandatory.

Please note that any cancellation of enrollment must be send to phd@health.sdu.dk 4 weeks before course start!
We are ordering the laboratory animals exactly 2 weeks before course start and the number of resources are calculated after number of participant. Therefore it is important that you kindly send us your cancellation at latest 4 weeks before course start!
Course fee
The course is free of charge for PhD students at the Danish Universities that have joined the Open Market agreement and NorDoc.
Master students from the NAT, SDU - please contact phd@health.sdu.dk before you enroll in the course. If you are not enrolled correctly you might have to pay for you participation!
