English grammar in context

Course description

This 2½ day course aims to help you produce clear and concise scientific text in English with an easily understandable message. We will help you feel more confident about writing scientific texts in English and will give you strategies for reflecting on your own writing style.

The text examples and grammar exercises relate to the health sciences, but students from other faculties are welcome to attend.

On Day 1, we practice recognising and using the four English sentence types and then discuss correct use of relative pronouns.
On Day 2, we look at strategies for making your message clearer, such as using the standard English word order, ensuring subject-verb agreement, and removing unnecessary words. We also discuss academic vocabulary and style.

Day 3 is a half-day held online, where you meet in small groups on Zoom to get practice commenting on other people’s texts and getting feedback on your own text.
