Aim
The aim of the course is to
- obtain knowledge on existing health, social and welfare related registers
- design studies using existing registers
- identify epidemiological problems in register-based research
Content
The participants are introduced to registers and register-based studies, epidemiological problems within register-based research and how to design register-based studies.
Topics covered are:
- Registers and register-based studies,
- data management including data control,
- register-based epidemiology,
- monitoring development of health and disease in space and time,
- design and analysis of studies based on register data including cross-sectional, case-control, cohort and longitudinal studies.
The focus is on application of the concepts by practical exercises using SAS or STATA and working with own project.
Course arrangement
A 4-week course. Five full days in the first week with lectures, seminars and exercises. Exercises will be with examples from Danish registers. The following three weeks participants work with their on project and prepare a course report.
Teaching arrangement
In the first week, there will be lectures, seminars and exercises (full days). The following three weeks participants (individually) work with their on project and prepare a course report. Participants will have consultations with course lecturers regarding their project. By the end of the three weeks the report is handed-in. The reports will be commented in writing by the teachers.
Prerequisite
- The PhD course Biostatistics I or a similar course.
- Knowledge about SAS or STATA.
- Participants should bring their own laptop with SAS version 9.3/9.4 or STATA version 13/14.

The course is free of charge for PhD students enrolled in Universities that have joined the "Open market agreement".
The course fee for other participants is DKK 7646,-
