Aim
The aim of the course is to qualify PhD-students working with methods based in qualitative research traditions to generate data in a relevant and focused way. Particular emphasis is given to positioning of the research within theory of science and epistemology, as well as, critical reflection in relation to central elements of the data generation process, and strengths and weaknesses of specific techniques. Participants will be qualified to plan and carry through empirical data generation and to quality assess the data acquired. In addition participants will be able to do relevant and focused literature searches in relation to the epistemological aims of the research project.
Form
The course employs lectures, group discussions, hands-on exercises and presentations of participants’ written text on methodology of their own projects.

Demanded preparation and participation
It is expected that participants have experience with the use of qualitative methodology, e.g. from their master projects or from employment as research assistant.
Prior to the course, participants must reflect on
- The epistemological position the PhD-project and the researcher’s experience with generation of data, in particular experiences with the methods anticipated to be used in the PhD-project.
- Experiences with information- and literature searchers, and as part of this also which databases are well known.
Participants are expected to engage actively in the teaching and the exercises of the course.
As part of the course, each participant will develop a search protocol for literature searchers, and a text on own use of methods for data generation and own positioning in relation to theory of science.
Course fee
The course is free of charge for PhD students enrolled in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Southern Denmark.
For PhD students enrolled in other universities that have joined the "Open market agreement" the fee is DKK 540,-
The course fee for other participants is DKK 11186,-.
