R4PhD: A Hands-On Introduction to R and Data Science

From raw data to reproducible research results.

Want to learn R but don’t know where to start? Or perhaps you’ve already tried R but would like a more structured approach to working with your research data?

R4PhD is a practical, hands-on introduction to R programming and data science, designed specifically for PhD students. No prior programming experience is required.

We guide you step by step through the essentials of a research data workflow, from importing, cleaning, and managing data to visualisation, statistical analysis, and reporting.

Along the way, you’ll learn to use R and the Tidyverse to develop efficient, transparent, and reproducible workflows that you can apply directly to your own research projects.

Our focus is on learning by doing. You’ll spend plenty of time writing code, exploring data, and solving practical problems rather than just listening to lectures.

By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills and confidence to start building your own reproducible research workflows in R.

Course structure

The course consists of four teaching days, organised into two blocks of two consecutive days. Between the blocks, participants should expect to spend approximately one full working day completing a home assignment.

We provide sample datasets and guided exercises throughout the course. However, we also encourage you to bring your own research data! Participants can work with their own datasets during the home assignment and on the final teaching days, with guidance from the instructors.

An established course with positive feedback

R4PhD has been taught and continuously refined over multiple iterations, incorporating feedback from previous participants. The course has consistently received positive evaluations, helping us develop a practical and accessible introduction to R programming for researchers.
