Danes' movement habits were examined closely in 2020 when Moving Denmark was conducted for the first time. In 2025, movement habits among adults, i.e., +15 years, will also be investigated, allowing for the observation of potential shifts.
Overall, Moving Denmark 2025 consists of two parts:
- Studies of movement habits among children, young people, and adults.
- Studies of municipalities' goals and initiatives for the promotion of physical activity.
1. Movement habits of children, young people, and adults
The study of Danes' movement habits includes:
- Movement habits of children and young people (3-14 years): Questionnaire survey among 180,000 children and young people (via their parents) in all municipalities. Takes place in October-November 2025.
- Movement habits of adults (+15 years): Questionnaire survey among 318,000 citizens in all municipalities. Takes place in October-November 2025.
- Causes and explanations for the development in movement habits 2020-2025: Panel survey among approx. 65,000 adults who participated in Moving Denmark 2020. Takes place in October-November 2025.
2. Municipal initiatives for promotion of physical activity
The study of municipalities' goals and initiatives for the promotion of physical activity includes:
- Mapping of initiatives, strategies, and goals regarding the promotion of physical activity in municipalities. Takes place in March-November 2024.
- Study of at least 5 'natural experiments', i.e., concrete initiatives implemented in the municipalities between 2020 and 2025. Takes place in February-December 2026.
- Case studies of at least 5 initiatives for the promotion of physical activity in municipalities. Takes place in July 2025 to July 2026.
Each municipality – its own study
Moving Denmark 2025 is conducted, just like in 2020, in all 98 municipalities. In every single municipality, the study will provide a picture of the inhabitants' movement habits and contribute explanations for the differences seen.
When the results are available, each municipality will receive a brief regarding specifically their citizens' movement habits, and the researchers will provide advice on what can be done specifically in their area to create more movement. This will happen, among other things, at local movement meetings.
Course over 4 years
The project will be carried out over a period of 4 years – from 1 February 2024 to 31 January 2028. Data collection is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026. The 98 local 'campaigns' will be carried out in 2027.
