Entry requirements

To apply for the Master's programme in American Studies you need a relevant Bachelor's degree. You can apply if you hold one of the following Bachelor degrees:

• American Studies from SDU - gives you a legal claim for admission
• English from SDU
• History from SDU
• Journalism from SDU
• Business, language and culture (BA. Negot.) - English from SDU
• International Business Communication - media/communication (English) from SDU 
• International Business Communication - International Marketing/communication (English) from SDU 
• International Business Communication - English, IT and Digital Communication from SDU 
• International Business Communication - two foreign languages (with English) from SDU 
• Political Science from SDU

You can also apply if you hold a similar degree including a minimum of 60 ECTS in total within the following areas (both areas must be covered with a minimum of 10 ECTS):

• History and social relations
  - comprising subjects such as anthropology, social relations (including comparative social description), historical analysis, international politics and international economics as well as political science and political structures

• Culture
  – comprising subjects such as literature, cultural history, intercultural relations, cultural analysis and media

English language requirements

The programme is taught in English. If your Bachelor’s degree is not from SDU, you are required to submit proof of your proficiency in English. See the English language requirements.

Statement of academic interest

As a part of your application, you must include a statement of academic interest in English, which contains the following:

• Account of the relevance of your Bachelor’s degree in regard to the Master’s programme, e.g. with reference to parts of your qualifying degree. Hereby showing, that you have considered the content and structure of the Master’s programme.
• Account of the relevance of any occupational experience in regard to the Master’s programme
• Account of the relevance of other experience (e.g. other education, voluntary work or studies abroad) in regard to the Master’s programme
• Account of the knowledge you have about certain areas with relevance to the Master’s programme

Selection criteria

There is a limited number of study places in the programme. If there are more qualified applicants than study places, the following criteria are used for the selection of applicants without a legal claim. Each criterion weighs 50% in the overall assessment.

• The grade point average of your qualifying degree

  - If the degree is not completed at the time of application, the grade point average is calculated based on the courses passed at the time of application

• Statement of academic interest

Application deadlines

The application deadlines for study start 1. September are:

• 1. February for non-EU/EEA citizens
• 1. March for EU/EEA and Swiss citizens and applicants holding a Danish residence permit
