New Year's reception at campus Sønderborg

About 100 guests from academia, industry and local authorities from either side of the Danish-German border gathered for the New Year’s reception at SDU’s campus in Sønderborg; this year organized by the Mads Clausen Institute.

The Mads Clausen Institute has recently gone through major organisational changes resulting in the establishment of sections and centres. Head of Institute Horst-Günter Rubahn expressed his confidence in a successful year to come, with for instance six new Interreg project launches: PE:Region, Rollflex, CarpeDIEM, Green PE, Prometheus and SPICE. The Rollflex project will make use a newly established laboratory and innovation facility with a roll-to-roll system for upscaling of research prototypes for manufacture - for example printed organic solar cells.

Henrik Bindslev, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, emphasized that Sønderborg as an international campus is a driving force for the science of SDU and that the active collaboration between MCI and industry is an important asset for the region. Erik Lauritzen, Mayor of Sønderborg Municipality, gave an overview of new town projects for the harbour front and praised the good relationship to the university. He sees the university and its students as a benefit for Sønderborg and the region. Head of MCI’s steering committee, Troels Petersen - Senior Vice President at Danfoss, pointed out that the new town projects as well as the industry of the region need infrastructure to support the efforts to attract more engineers to the area and to maintain start-ups in Sønderborg.

Katherine Richardson, Professor at University of Copenhagen, gave a stirring talk on ‘COP21 in Paris: What does it mean for Denmark’ with the conclusion that a lot of efforts are required in real reduction of CO2 emissions; in particular in the transport and agricultural sectors. Please follow by watching the video recording.

The New Year’s reception 2016 was rounded off by talks, a video installation, snacks and a glass of bubbly.
