Workshop on Modal Particles

CALL FOR PAPERS

Workshop: Getting to the bottom of modal particles

1-2 July 2014

University of Southern Denmark, Sønderborg, Denmark

In this workshop we want to get to the bottom of the functions of the so-called modal particles. We invite participants who are passionate about understanding what makes modal particles tick and who would like to contribute to an in-depth discussion in which we try to pin down the true nature of, and mechanisms involved in, modal particles and their interpretations. Confirmed contributions include work on modal particles in German, Danish and French, and contributions on other languages are welcome as well.

The abstract should consist of 1.000-1.500 words and briefly address the following points:

  • What is your position on the function(s) of modal particles?
  • What is the role of the syntactic position of the modal particles in the language(s) you are working on?
  • What is the relationship between modal particles and other particles (sentence adverbs, discourse particles etc.) in the language(s) you are working on?

Deadline for the abstract: 1 May 2014.

Please send your abstract to Maria Alm: mhalm@sdu.dk
