Dialogue and Reconciliation: Potentials and Pitfalls of Building Bridges through Deliberative Citizen Assemblies

In Western democracies, there is growing concern about increasing polarization among citizens and declining trust in representative democracy. This project investigates whether both polarization among citizens and gaps between citizens and politicians can be addressed through the use of deliberative citizen assemblies, where randomly selected citizens meet to discuss important issues with guidance from experts, often with the aim of formulating a series of recommendations for politicians. Through an experiment, the project will examine whether participation in such citizen assemblies can affect polarization among citizens depending on how participants make decisions in the assembly. Additionally, the project will focus on two major citizen assemblies in Danish municipalities that will discuss climate adaptation and welfare policy, and analyze the assemblies' effects on trust in political institutions among both participants and the broader citizenry in the municipalities.

Effective Measures to Reduce Absenteeism in the Public Sector

High absenteeism is one of the biggest challenges in the labor market, leading to significant economic and personal costs for both individuals and companies. There is great potential in reducing and preventing absenteeism in parts of the public sector that struggle with high absenteeism.

This Ph.D. project investigates a range of measures that have been implemented in various workplaces in the public sector. The measures aim to improve the working environment and reduce absenteeism. The project uses statistical methods to analyze the impact of these measures on the working environment and absenteeism, based on the workplaces' own data.

Research in labor economics is a relatively new field, and this project also aims to contribute new knowledge and practical recommendations in the area. This is done by developing an economic model that compares the costs of the measures with the potential savings associated with reduced absenteeism.

The project is carried out in collaboration with the National Research Center for the Working Environment.

Democracy and Terrorism – How Civil Rights Affect Terrorism

This project aims to investigate how civil rights affect the level of terrorism that states experience. The study addresses a central debate in the literature, where civil rights are argued to either reduce terrorism by providing peaceful outlets for dissent or increase it by enabling exploitation by terrorist groups. By using large-scale quantitative analyses and qualitative case studies, the project seeks to disentangle these effects across different categories of civil rights, such as personal integrity, legal equality, private freedoms, and political freedoms.

The results aim to provide a robust understanding of how civil rights affect terrorism and contribute evidence-based insights to political debates on balancing civil liberties and security.

Greenland’s heightened role and influence in security and defence policy

This project investigates Greenland’s heightened role and influence in security and defence policy. The Arctic is undergoing seismic shifts in its security dynamics, caused by accelerating climate change and intensifying great power competition. Greenland is increasingly becoming a central regional actor and has in recent years gained more influence in the areas of foreign, security, and defence policy. Having a small population and being a semi-independent territory under the state of Denmark, Greenland faces several challenges when navigating the security landscape and great power competition in the region. This involves dealing with a complicated post-colonial constellation and sometimes conflicting interests between Greenland and Denmark, while tackling the pressure from the great powers, which can be a challenge considering Greenland’s population size and central administration size compared to that of the US, China, or Denmark.

The aim of this project is to gain a deeper understanding of how Greenland shapes its approaches to security and defence matters, as well as the reciprocal influence between the Greenlandic and Danish approaches, and how Greenland navigates the new security dynamics in the Arctic.

Assembling Artificial Intelligence and Civilian Harm Mitigation

The advancement of AI has significantly impacted the defense and security sectors, presenting both opportunities and challenges in mitigating civilian harm during military interventions. This PhD project will critically examine how AI systems, when integrated into Civilian Harm Mitigation frameworks, or, conversely, viewed from a civilian protection angle, influence the complex interplay of actors, technologies, and logics that constitute modern military organizations and interventions.

Building on the concept of assemblage as well as international practice theory more generally, this research will analyze AI’s role in transforming international intervention assemblages and civilian protection in conflict. The project thus seeks to contribute to academic debates on the impact of AI in the military domain and by focusing on the understudied civilian protection aspect. It thereby also aims at contributing to public debates on the ethics and impact of AI on military organizations and operations.
