BUFFERTECH-Optimization of Ecosystem Services Provided by Buffer Strips Using Novel Technological Methods. Buffertech conducts research in how to optimize the use of 50.000 ha of bufferzones along Danish streams for nutrient retention, biodiversity, biomass production for biogas, and phosphorus recovery for food or fertilizer.
At SDU we have focus on engineered bufferzones where agricultural drainage water is forced to infiltrate the soils before reaching the stream. We measure nitrogen and phosphorus retention in such facilities at two sites in Jutland and we experiment with iron addition to further enhance phosphorus retention.
